Educational Mission
"The educational mission of the Department is to provide lifelong
educational activities for clinicians and investigators through a series of
formal and informal activities, including predoctoral and postdoctoral training
of research scientists, required and elective medical student rotations,
training of medical psychologists, general residency training and fellowship
training of physicians, and continuing medical education.
The overall goal of training is to prepare clinicians and investigators
for opportunities and challenges of the twenty-first century.
The training programs have set for all clinicians and clinical
investigators specific clinical competencies, which must be achieved.
Built upon those competencies are multiple opportunities for trainees to
specialize, pursue unique interests and develop as leaders in community based
practice and academia. The
necessary close relationship between our training program and training programs
in other medical specialties is highlighted by a joint medicine/psychiatry
residency program and programs in medical psychology, which focus upon
behavioral interventions for chronic medical illnesses.
Training programs in the department take advantage of a broad range of
clinical settings, research labs and technology based teaching aids.
The cornerstone of training, however, is mentorship of trainees by
experienced clinicians and investigators, relationships that continue for many
years beyond formal training.
