GLAXO
WELLCOME / DUKE UNIVERSITY
Fellowship
In Psychopharmacology
The two-year program
in Clinical Psychopharmacology is jointly sponsored by Glaxo Wellcome and the
Department of Psychiatry at Duke University. The fellow will learn the
intricacies of the drug discovery process, the regulatory and legal issues, and
the production and marketing strategies involved in the introduction of
pharmaceuticals as therapeutic entities. This program will prepare physicians
for careers in pharmaceutical research and development, in academia, in clinical
research, or in a governmental agency that deals with drugs or therapeutics.
During the first year
of the program, most of the fellow’s time will be spent at Duke University in
Durham, North Carolina, and the remaining portion at Glaxo Wellcome. The
emphasis will be on participation in clinical studies taking place in the
Anxiety and Traumatic Stress Program. During this year, a preceptor from Glaxo
Wellcome will be chosen and will work with the fellow to develop a research
project to be undertaken in the second year. Opportunities will also be
available for the fellow to learn the regulatory aspects of the pharmaceutical
industry during the portion of the fellow’s time at Glaxo Wellcome.
The second year of the
fellowship will be conducted at Glaxo Wellcome in Research Triangle Park, N.C.
Most of the time will be spent at this facility and the remainder at Duke
University. The focus of the second year is on the clinical phases of new drug
development, with an emphasis on clinical study design and conduct. During the
year, the fellow will become an integral member of the clinical research
department which his/her preceptor leads.
The candidate must
hold the M.D. degree and must have satisfactorily completed an accredited
residency program, or be in the fourth year of a residency program in
Psychiatry. The candidate must also demonstrate the personal and academic
characteristics necessary to complete the course of study.
All interested
candidates must submit a letter of application stating personal goals as related
to the Fellowship, three letters of support, and a curriculum vitae by February
1, 2000, to:
