Post-doc Research Fellowship in Religion and Health

Post-doc Research Fellowship in Religion and Health
During a five (5) year period (July 1, 2002 – June 30, 2007), our objective is to train eight (8) scientists to conduct high-quality research in the area of religion/spirituality and health, to represent the next generation of research leaders in this field.  The post-doc fellowship is modeled after NIH's National Research Service Awards (NRSAs), which Duke's Aging Center has participated in for the past 10 years.   The program will be administratively based in the Center for the Study of Religion/Spirituality and Health at Duke. (http://www.geri.duke.edu/religion/Homepage.HTML)

The intent of the proposed training program is to take post-doctoral fellows at the M.D. or Ph.D. level that have shown academic promise in their own disciplines and insure that they obtain the background, technical training and network of contacts in the field so that they can work as independent scientists conducting NIH-level research on religion/spirituality and health.  Toward that end, fellows will spend most of their time during their 2-year fellowship period working directly on research projects with their mentors.  The outline of the research to be executed is set forth by the trainee with his/her mentor as part of the application for the fellowship.  The rest of the training is done by attending 23 two to three hour didactic seminars each year, journal club, and if desired, by attending classes to obtain a Masters of Health Science degree in biostatistics from Duke University's biometry program over the two years.

The fellow will spend full-time in the program, and receive as compensation $35,000/year salary, health insurance, and $12,500 per year to conduct research and/or pay for biometry program classes.  Applications will be competitive and reviewed by a selection committee composed of: Linda K. George, Ph.D., Harold G. Koenig, M.D., Dan G. Blazer, M.D., Ph.D., Keith G. Meador, M.D., TH.M., and Harvey J. Cohen, M.D.  Those who are interested in learning more about the program should contact Dr. Koenig at koenig@geri.duke.edu.
