The National Institute of Mental Health’s
Clinical Research Center is a longitudinal, naturalistic study of depression
in late life. Currently
(10/20/99), the study has enrolled 260 depressed patients and 130
non-depressed controls. The
patients receive 5 years of follow-up care from one of our four research
psychiatrists (Dr. David Steffens, Dr. Ken Gersing, Dr. Kishore Gadde, and Dr.
John Beyer), biannual MRI’s, yearly neuropsychological testing, and yearly
psychosocial interviews (Duke Depression Evaluation Schedule).
The patients come in once every three months for medication management
visits. Patients are also offered
entrance into the DBT group (link). The
research controls come in once a year and get administered the DDES and the
neuropsychological battery yearly, and the MRI biannually.
