The primary aim of this project is to evaluate the impact of medial orbital prefrontal cortex lesions and basal ganglia lesions on brain regions critical to the mood circuit. This project will shed light on the nature and location of some of the disruptions of the circuits described earlier. The information from this project is critical for all other projects and will be needed to understand results from the other projects. This project will lead to significant innovation in the development of new imaging techniques and assessment tools. The results of the project should greatly aid our understanding of the neuroanatomical substrates of depression. This project will identify patients for subsequent post mortem studies in project 2 and be the source of subjects for project 3 and 5.
