Duke Center for Nicotine and Smoking Cessation Research (CNSCR)
Jean Beckham, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in
the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University Medical Center,
and a staff clinical psychologist for the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Clinical Team at
the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Her clinical research focuses on the long-term
effects, both psychological and physical, of exposure to trauma. She is currently funded
to examine the effect of trauma exposure, posttraumatic stress disorder and generalized
anxiety disorder on smoking behavior. She is also funded to evaluate the relationship
between mood, psychophysiological response and health problems in veterans with
posttraumatic stress disorder. Under review is a project to evaluate the effect of trauma
exposure, posttraumatic stress disorder and menstrual cycle in women smokers.
James D. Lane, Ph.D. is an Associate Research
Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University
Medical Center. Dr. Lane's area of study is in Medical Psychology & Behavioral
Medicine. His current research interests include the study of caffeine and the
investigation of smoking cessation on special clinical populations. Please visit Dr.

Eric C. Westman, M.D., MHS, an Assistant Professor in the Department of
Medicine at Duke University, Director of the Durham VA and Duke University Smoking
Research Lab, Co-director of the Durham VA Stop Smoking Clinic, and an Ambulatory Care
Physician at the Durham VA Medical Center. In collaboration with the Nicotine Research
Program, his research interests include pharmacologic treatments for smoking cessation and
understanding the basis for nicotine dependence. He has over 30 scientific publications,
serves on the Veterans Affairs National Smoke-Free Advisory Group, and gives grand rounds
and CME lectures on smoking cessation for clinicians. His qualifications include a
B.A. in history from Stanford University, M.D. from the University of Wisconsin/Madison,
completed residency and chief residency in internal medicine at the University of
Kentucky/Lexington, and a Masters in biometry during a General Medicine Fellowship at Duke
